Osteopathy & Reformer Pilates in Maidstone, Kent
When Joseph Pilates developed Pilates in the early 20th Century, he used various pieces of equipment to improve the ability of his students to be able to work out their entire body through Pilates exercises, including stretches and strengthening exercises. He called the pieces of equipment ‘apparatus’. The most well-known and popular piece of apparatus was called the Universal Reformer, which today is just known as the Reformer machine.
As you can see the picture above, the Reformer machine is a metal frame which has a padded seat that we call the carriage. The carriage moves freely up and down the Reformer, it has a head rest and shoulder pads to improve comfort. There is a foot bar at one end of the Reformer that can be raised and lowered if necessary. There are also springs attached to the frame which can be used to increase tension depending on the level of resistance required for a particular exercise. Finally, there are two long ropes with loop hands attached to pulleys, they can be used for the feet or hands giving you a true full body work out. At first glance the machine can look intimidating, but once you get used to it my clients say they love it, because of the amazing stretches and muscle control they can achieve.
The Reformer Pilates classes take place in a purpose-built, air-conditioned Pilates studio. The classes are small, up to four, duets or 1 to 1 session on the Reformers. Reformer Pilates is suitable for everyone from beginners to advanced, whether you’re new to exercise, already fairly active, during pregnancy and postpartum. It is also suitable for those with injuries who need adaptations as well as rehabilitation. Men and women of all shapes and sizes can all take part in Reformer Pilates. The Reformer hasn’t just been designed to push you further in your movement, it can really test your strength and muscle control, it can also assist you in making the correct movements, help you engage the right muscles and support you in movement. It really is an adaptable piece of equipment that can help everyone.
Some of the classes (dependant on teacher) are to music to create a relaxed and fun atmosphere – I can also take requests! I like you to work hard, but have fun too, the results will follow…
